The Charity SectorFrom the kindness shown by the Good Samaritan, through the work of St Bartholomew's Hospital (probably England's oldest charity, founded in 1123), to the help provided by charities such as Comic Relief, Amnesty International and Oxfam in the 21st century, charities and acts of charity have underpinned civic society for hundreds of years. Our sector is known by many different names. These include the not for profit sector, the non profit sector (especially in America), the voluntary sector, the third sector, and the voluntary and community sector. Increasing social need, at home and abroad, has led to sustained growth across the sector. The Charity Sector now employs over 600,000 paid staff, generates an income of over £26 billion and are taking on greater responsibilities in policy development and service delivery. The increased role and influence of the sector led to a new Charities Act 2006 as well as the establishment of a new office of the third sector. The anticipated growth across our sector will create hundreds of opportunities for skilled and committed individuals. Network Charity Recruitment is committed to helping as many people as possible to access these opportunities.
